The musical about Tadeusz Kościuszko is a daring story about a hero of his time, entangled in history and influencing generational changes. It is rare that the ideas of one man connect political transformations on different continents, permeate the consciousness of people of diverse origins, and become a comprehensible language transcending all divisions.
„Love creates heroes” wrote Jean-Jacques Rousseau in „The New Heloise” and perhaps unconsciously dedicated this sentence to young Tadeusz, madly in love with Ludwika Sosnowska. Their love was thwarted by the woman’s ruthless father, hetman Sosnowski, who prioritized the noble birth of his daughter’s suitor. Tadeusz was rejected and the insult he experienced became a powerful impetus for further conquests, though not necessarily romantic ones.
We will travel the world with its first-class citizen – a visionary of military engineering, a general, and a friend to both distinguished figures and ordinary people. An important and, as it turns out, long stop in his life will be the United States and the War of Independence, in which Kościuszko played a strategic role. This is not just about the fortifications at West Pont, but also about something that requires just as much talent and predisposition. Our hero, as befits the country of origin of many musical genres, will start rapping in the States! He will have true masters as teachers – Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, and Alexander Hamilton.
Kościuszko will fight in defence of the Constitution of 3 May and stand up for the freedom of others more often than for his own. He will win battles nad lose an uprising. He will be imprisoned, which instead of suffocating his vital energy, will awaken new talents and strengthen his spirit. He will meet many women, but in their eyes he will always search for lost past. He will travel the world, but his dream will be an ordinary life. Can the biography of one man encompass all these things?
In the stage reality, Kościuszko will experience even more! The power of theatre lies in its ability to combine facts and whispers of imagination – from this ferment, an alternative reality will emerge. Does it distance us from our hero’s true story, or, on the contrary, offer a chance to experience unrealized plans and dreams?
Rafał Kozok will play Tadeusz Kościuszko and Ewa Szlempo-Kruszyńska will play Ludwika Sosnowska. Konrad Imiela is responsible for direction, script and lyrics whereas Grzegorz Rdzak stands for music and musical direction. Jacek Gębura is preparing choreography, Justyna Elminowska is creating set design, and Anna Chadaj is designing costumes. Agata Bartos and Piotr Bartos are responsible for videos, and Damian Pawella stands for sound direcion.
